1. The Platform Fees
When it comes to fees, the platforms have completely different structures.
- OnlyFans: Takes a flat 20% fee on all earnings. This includes subscriptions, PPV (pay-per-view) messages, and tips. There are no hidden payment processing fees; what you see is what you get (80%).
- Patreon: Operates on tiered pricing (Pro is 8%, Premium is 12%). However, Patreon does not include payment processing fees in that cut. Payment processing usually takes an additional 5% + $0.10 to $0.30 per transaction. This means the actual total cut Patreon takes is closer to 13% to 15%.
Winner for Fees: Patreon. Even with payment processing fees added on, Patreon generally leaves you with 85-87% of your gross revenue, whereas OnlyFans strictly caps you at 80%.
2. Brand Perception & Content Policies
This is usually the deciding factor for most creators.
OnlyFans is synonymous with NSFW (Not Safe For Work) adult content. While many fitness influencers, musicians, and chefs use the platform successfully, you cannot escape the brand association. If you are seeking family-friendly brand deals, linking an OnlyFans in your bio can occasionally cause friction with conservative sponsors.
Patreon is the gold standard for artists, podcasters, YouTubers, and writers. It is widely respected and 100% brand-safe. However, Patreon strictly prohibits explicit sexual content. If your monetization strategy relies on NSFW material, Patreon will eventually ban your account.
3. Features & Upsells
OnlyFans has mastered the art of the Pay-Per-View (PPV) message. On OnlyFans, you can lock a picture or video in a direct message behind a $20 paywall. This feature alone is why many top creators make more money on OnlyFans despite the higher 20% platform fee.
Patreon is heavily focused on tier-based subscriptions (e.g., $5 for Early Access, $10 for Behind the Scenes, $50 for 1-on-1 calls). Patreon also recently introduced integrated digital product sales (Shop), allowing creators to sell standalone files without requiring a subscription.
The Verdict
If you are an artist, podcaster, or YouTuber looking to build a community and sell tiers, Patreon is the better choice.
If your content skirts the edge of NSFW, or if your primary strategy involves chatting with fans and selling pay-per-view content via DMs, OnlyFans will generate significantly more revenue despite its higher fees.
